Primer On Fuel Oil

Fuel Oil is the least expensive most efficient fuel.
Fuel Oil fired water heaters are up to ten times faster than electric and three times faster than natural gas.
Fuel Oil is a safe and clean fuel.

Storage: Proper storage is essential for environmental protection, insurability and regulatory compliance.

  • Leaking tanks or piping can lead to expensive clean up and lower property values.
  • Insurance companies are requiring upgrading prior to renewing policies.

    The regulatory authority (TSSA) requires:
    1. Underground tanks be removed or upgraded with corrosion, spill and air fill protection according to a specific schedule.
    2. Above ground systems inspected for compliance before a new supplier makes a first delivery, before a C.O.D. delivery, at least ten years, and before 2007.
    3. Systems are maintained annually.

Piping: Both hidden and exposed piping can be a source of problems.

  • Underground pipe must be double wall with leak protection.
  • Many existing systems have single wall copper pipe in or under the basement floor.
  • Many above ground piping systems are exposed to physical damage such as frost heave, tank movement or falling ice.

Oil Burning Equipment: All fossil fuel burning appliance (Fuel Oil, Natural Gas, Propane). Must be serviced annually.

  • Poor combustion increases heating costs.

Inefficient combustion can create hazardous conditions within a building.

It is generally not financially viable to upgrade or replace underground tanks with an underground system.

It is best to install a contained single wall aboveground tank indoors or a double wall above ground tank outdoors.
It is best to provide protection for fuel oil piping by using double wall flex pipe underground or a rigid duct to protect flexible copper pipe aboveground.
Tank outlets should be caged and an appropriate flex installed at the tank-piping surface.
